> charted and chartered charted and chartered are liable to be confused. Charted is formed from the verb "to chart", meaning "to make a chart or map of", as in "few charted areas of the continent". It is more common in the negative, as in "uncharted areas of the interior of the country". Chartered has two meanings. One is formed from the verb "to charter", meaning "to hire", as in "a chartered yacht". The other is usually found in such phrases as "chartered" accountant/surveyor/engineer, etc", and means "an accountant, etc, who has passed the examinations of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, etc". The institutes in question have received a royal charter or "document granting certain official rights or privileges".
