Personal is an adjective meaning "of or affecting a person", as in "carry out the scheme for personal gain" and "her personal belongings"; "of or belonging to a particular person rather than a group", as in "state her personal opinion rather than the official company policy"; "done" in person", as in "thanks to her personal intervention"; "of the body", as in "personal hygiene"; "critical of a person's character, etc", as in "upset" by her personal remarks". Personnel refers to "the people employed in a workplace, such as an an office, shop, factory, etc, considered collectively", as in "personnel officer, "personnel" department", "Some of the local firms are beginning to recruit more personnel" and "cut back on personnel during the recession". It is rather a formal word and is best restricted to a business situation, such as recruitment advertisements. Words such as "staff", "workers" and "employees" can be used instead.
