> quasi- quasi- is Latin in origin and means "as if, as it were". In English it is combined with adjectives in the sense of "seemingly, apparently, but not really", as in "He gave a quasi-scientific explanation of the occurrence which convinced many people but did not fool his colleagues", or "partly, to a certain extent but not completely", as in "It is a quasi-official body which does not have full powers". Quasi- can also be combined with nouns to mean "seeming, but not really", as in "a quasi-socialist who is really a capitalist" and "a quasi-Christian who will not give donations to charity". Quasi- has several possible pronunciations. It can be pronounced kway-zi, kway-si or kwah-si.
