> reflexive pronoun A pronoun that ends in "-self" or "-selves" and refers back to a noun or pronoun that has occurred earlier in the same sentence. The reflexive pronouns include "myself", "ourselves"; "yourself", "yourselves"; "himself", "herself", "itself", "themselves". Examples include "The children washed themselves", "He cut himself shaving", "Have you hurt yourself?" and "She has cured herself of the habit". Reflexive pronouns are sometimes used for emphasis, as in "The town itself was not very interesting" and "The headmaster himself punished the boys". They can also be used to indicate that something has been done by somebody by his/her own efforts without any help, as in "He built the house himself", "We converted the attic ourselves". They can also indicate that someone or something is alone, as in "She lives by herself" and "The house stands by itself".
