> suit and suite suit and suite are liable to be confused. They look similar but they have completely different meanings. Suit has several meanings. These include "a set of clothes", as in "He was wearing a tweed three-piece suit" (a jacket, trousers and waistcoat in the same material) and "She was married in a white suit, rather than a dress"; "one of the four sets of playing cards", as in "Which suit is trump?"; and "an action in a court of law", as in "bring a suit against her ex-husband for non-payment of maintenance". Suite refers to "a set of furniture", as in "prefer non-matching chairs to the traditional three-piece suite" (a sofa and two armchairs in the same material); "a set of rooms", as in "book a suite at an expensive hotel" and "the hotel's honeymoon suite"; and "a musical composition consisting of three or more related parts", as in "a ballet suite". Note the e at the end of suite. Suit is pronounced soot or syoot. Suite is pronounced sweet. Pour éviter fautes de grammaire, contresens et confusions.
