> third person A third party, not the speaker or the person or thing being spoken to. Note that "person" in this context can refer to things as well as people. "Person" in this sense applies to personal pronouns. The third person singular forms are "he", "she" and "it" when the subject of a sentence or clause, as in "She will win" and "It will be fine". The third person singular forms are "him", "her","it" when the object, as in "His behaviour hurt her" and "She meant it". The third person plural is "they" when the subject, as in "They have left" and "They were angry" and "them" when the object, as in "His words made them angry" and "We accompanied them". The possessive forms of the singular are "his", "hers" and "its", as in "he played his guitar" and "The dog hurt its leg", and the the possessive form of the plural is theirs, as in "That car is theirs" and "They say that the book is theirs".
