> kaleidoscope
kaleidoscope is frequently misspelt. Note the ei and the first o. It is pronounced with the emphasis on the second syllable, which rhymes with "my", as kal-i-do-skop. Kaleidoscope refers to "a kind of toy consisting of a tube containing small loose pieces of coloured glass and mirrors which reflect the glass pieces to form changing patterns when the tube is turned", as in "The child was fascinated by the changing colours of the kaleidoscope". It also means "a constantly and rapidly changing pattern", as in "The Eastern market was a kaleidoscope of colour", or "a succession of changing phases", as in "the kaleidoscope of international politics". |
